Akali Baba Phula Singh Ji
Jathedar Akali Baba Phula Singh Ji held the esteemed position of General in the Budha Dal, the elite army during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji. Born in 1761 to Baba Ishar Singh Ji of Misl Nishanchia, Baba Ji's father attained martyrdom in a battle led by Jathedar Akali Baba Naina Singh Ji. Left orphaned, Akali Baba Phula Singh Ji was raised under the care of Baba Naina Singh Ji. Initially joining Misl Shaheedan, Baba Ji displayed great valor in battle before becoming a member of the Budha Dal. As Jathedar, Akali Baba Phula Singh Ji had committed to memory the entire Sundar Gutka of the Budha Dal and was renowned for his exceptional skills in Kirtan (devotional singing). He also served as the Jathedar of the Akaal Takhat, holding the highest position of authority among the Akali Nihangs. Even today, he is highly revered for his remarkable contributions. Baba Ji attained martyrdom on 14th March 1823, in the Battle of Naushera. Despite losing one of his legs in the battle, he tied his remaining leg to his horse and continued fighting until he achieved martyrdom.
