Guru Arjan Dev Ji
The fifth Guru, who polished the radiance ignited by the preceding four Gurus, ascended as the fifth successor to the sacred throne of Guru Nanak.
He upheld the truth and radiated the divine brilliance of Akaalpurakh, serving as a revered teacher with elevated stature, displaying spiritual magnificence derived from his own greatness. His position transcended the ranks of the five sacred sections of society.
(Bhai Gurdaas Ji Vaaran)
Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth embodiment of Sri Akaal Purakh, was born on 15 April 1563 in Goindwal Sahib to Guru Raam Daas Ji and Mata Bhani, who was the daughter of Guru Amar Daas Ji.
It was Guru Arjan Dev Ji who undertook the completion of Sri Harimandir Sahib in Amritsar. Additionally, Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled the hymns of the previous Gurus and various Bhagats, incorporating them into the sacred scripture known as Sri Adi Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which was installed at Sri Harimandir Sahib.
Tragically, Guru Arjan Dev Ji faced martyrdom at the hands of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The emperor demanded that Guru Ji remove all references to Islam from the Sri Adi Guru Granth Sahib Ji, deeming them offensive. However, Guru Arjan Dev Ji steadfastly refused to alter the hymns and, as a result, attained martyrdom on 30 May 1606 in Lahore.
Prior to their execution, Guru Arjan Dev Ji entrusted Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji with the responsibility of wielding arms and resisting tyranny. This led to the establishment of the Akaal Sena (Army of God), which operated under the leadership of the new successor, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was installed as the sixth master of the Sikh community.
